Brother Cadfael

Today in my 500 drawing prompts book I found that today’s prompt was for favorite book character. At first, I couldn’t think of any character that I would call my favorite. I mean I have a favorite author, Stephen King, but I wouldn’t call any of his characters my favorite. I enjoy his stories, but most of his characters aren’t really people I would look up to. I thought about it some and looked up favorite characters that other people like, but only one of them really resonated with me. Sherlock Holmes came close because I love a good detective story, but when it really comes down to it I think Brother Cadfael is my favorite. He has an analytical mind like Sherlock Holmes but Brother Cadfael is more empathetic. He would look the other way to help a person even if it went against the church’s dogma. He’s the kind of person that would follow the spirit of a law, but maybe not the letter of it if it was help someone in need. I remember staying up late when I was child to watch Brother Cadfael solve another mysterious death and treat the sick with his trusty milk of the poppy. Not until later in life did I try to read the novels by “Ellis Peters” (Edith Pargeter). I read as many as I could until I got tired of them. I didn’t finish the series, because I got burned out after reading so many of them in a row, however I’d still say that Brother Cadfael is my favorite book character.
