I was having a reading dry spell. I was stuck around page two-hundred in The Night Parade by Scott Ciencin. It’s a good book, but maybe it’s just ok for me. However, for weeks I wouldn’t go back to the book. What got me past my reading dry spell was picking up another book. Recently, I’ve been interested in genetics so I went to the bookstore and browsed their science section. Unfortunately, there was only one bookcase for science books meanwhile there were eight bookcases at my local Barnes & Nobel dedicated to Religion. Eventually, I did find a couple of books on genetics. One was geared toward high school students. The other was Genome by Matt Ridley. I know it’s a little outdated, but it had the information I wanted. I wanted to know what each chromosome does and I already picked up a few interesting tidbits from it. RNA came before DNA and we probably evolved from something close to protozoa not bacteria. Anyway, after that I took a good look at the pile of unread books on my night stand and started reading at least one chapter each day from as many of books as I can with the free time that I have. And just like that I was able to start reading The Night Parade. I just needed a little variety. Forcing myself to stick to one book, just made me not want to read at all. Take my advice, if you get stuck on a book that you want to finish but are having a hard time finishing said book, it’s ok to put it down and pick up another. A new book may just be the catalyst you need to get back in the habit of reading.
